BCHCM letter to NDP Premier Candidates

Dear NDP leader candidates: Mr. David Eby and Ms. Anjali Appadurai,

BC Health Care Matters began as a grassroots patient advocacy group and has now grown into a campaign of the Canada Pacific (CP) Health Care Matters Society. Our mission is to campaign for timely access to a Family Doctor for every resident of British Columbia. In just nine months, we have grown from an idea fostered by the one million British Columbians without a family doctor to an organization with over nearly 50,000 signatures on a petition demanding action. Our activity has garnered attention in all BC media outlets, held a huge rally on the steps of the legislature and has more plans to hold the BC government’s feet to the fire.

One of you will be elected the next BC NDP leader and as such become the BC Premier. We have two questions for your response:

1. What specifically will you do in your first six months as Premier to rapidly make family doctors available to all BC residents?

2. What long term changes will you make to our primary health care system to ensure equal available access for British Columbians to family doctors and specialized medical care? We not only need to bring the current crisis to an end, but we need to prevent it from ever happening again.

Your reply will be shared with the thousands of BC residents who do not have timely access to a family doctor and have become our supporters. We will consider sharing the questions and your reply with the general public. We will not take any position in the race as we are non- political. We are pro family doctors with equal access to health care for all British Columbians.

Your response will be expected no later than October 15, 2022.

Thank you for your desire to lead the NDP and to become the next BC Premier.

Sincerely, Camille Currie,

President/Director of BC Health Care Matters
