How do we move forward?
We see people across all provinces and even across many countries, struggling with their healthcare system. It can feel like the issue is too big and that each of us is too small to make a difference. If you’ve had this thought you are not alone. We would encourage you to pause and ground yourself in the moment. If you focus on the here and now, on your family and community, you will see more clearly that this is an issue you can have an impact on and one your community NEEDS you to advocate for.
People often ask where do we go from here? What can I do? What will you do next?
The answer is - we all have to play our part and become individual advocates in addition to the work BCHCM does. Advocating can be done in many ways and can include:
Keep informed; read reliable sources that delve beyond the surface of our Crisis. https://bchealthcarematters.com/blog
Spread awareness. Talk To your friends and family about the facts so that our whole population becomes more informed. https://bchealthcarematters.com/resident-impact-stories
Hang posters from our website in your workplace to spread awareness. https://bchealthcarematters.com/bchcm-materials
Order a lawn sign to raise awareness in your community. https://bchealthcarematters.com/shop
Write to your MLA and ask to meet with them. See our website for tips on how to prepare. https://bchealthcarematters.com/letter-templates
Help us raise funds for large scale advertisements like media commercials and signage. Connect us with individuals or corporations that would be willing to help fund advertisements such as this. https://bchealthcarematters.com/become-a-supporter
Join our virtual Town Halls that will begin in early February. We will have guest speakers that will take a deep dive with us into the Primary Care Crisis and where we go from here. https://bchealthcarematters.com/bchcm-events
Join our next virtual and in person events. Significant attendance at these events makes them more impactful. https://bchealthcarematters.com/bchcm-events
A lot of announcements by the Ministry of Health/provincial government have been made over the last 60 days and a lot of questions are still unanswered. We are spending a great deal of time reading and researching what these announcements truly mean for the patients and those caring for them. As more information becomes available we will continue to share updates with you. While individuals may have different ideas about what the solutions are, we can still advocate together to drive home that the current state of affairs is unacceptable. BCHCM is, and always has been, an advocacy group that will inform, educate, investigate, and explore options and advocate. We are not the individuals that will put solution proposals to the government but we will hold their feet to the fire. We will demand they answer for actions that do not result in positive patient outcomes or increased access to primary care.
At BCHCM we are only a handful of people volunteering our time after our other work and personal commitments. https://bchealthcarematters.com/bchcm-about-us We thank all of you for joining our Facebook group and for expressing your frustration with the system as it helps inform others about the struggles their fellow residents face. However, don’t forget that you must harness that anger and frustration as motivation to become an advocate. We are always looking for new members that want to join our board of volunteers so if you have a skill set that you feel could help propel our efforts further please send us an e-mail. Or, if you are someone that can only do one off tasks then please take a look at our Website and read over our “Get Involved” tab. Lastly, SHARE!!! Share everything you read in this group that you think matters, that helps inform you, that could awaken someone else. For those with limited time to commit, your greatest ability in this battle is to help spread awareness. Informed residents are residents that will speak up, that will demonstrate, that will make informed decisions next election time. https://bchealthcarematters.com/volunteer-opportunities
